EXCAVATIONS/REVELATIONS

This portfolio features work inspired by the monasteries at Subiaco (Italy) and the ancient city of Anagni, the territory of my father’s family. I go to Italy as a pilgrim seeking connections – – known and imagined, physical and emotional. I am drawn to the colorful swirling marble Cosmati pavements, and the ins and outs of the Gothic arches built into the ancient rock.

As the wild and rocky terrain meets the rushing Anio River at Subiaco the intermingled layers of the pagan and Christian world are revealed. Here, in the 1st century Emperor Nero built his sumptuous villa “Sublaqueum” named so because it was positioned under several artificial lakes. Years after the fall of the Roman Empire, the ruins were transformed into the venerable monastery of St. Benedict. The heart of the monastic complex is the Sacro Speco (sacred cave) where Benedict lived as a hermit for three years.
